Ellen Bates Schaller


Ellen Bates Schaller, 97, formerly of 8076 Turin Road, and recently of Towson, Maryland, passed away on Saturday, August 3, 2019 following a brief illness.

Ellen Addie Bates was born March 3, 1922 in Rome, the daughter of Elmer and Genevieve Tuttle Bates. She graduated from Rome Free Academy in 1940. She married the late Thomas P. Schaller on August 21, 1945 at St. Mary’s Rectory. He passed away in 1983. Mrs. Schaller worked for six years in the Traffic Department of Revere Copper and Brass before joining her husband in operating T. P. Schaller’s Market on Turin Road. She and Tom both loved bowling and golf, and competed on the local level in both sports for many years. She was a member of the Order of the Eastern Star, Holly Chapter, and the Rome Historical Society. She was a member of Calvary United Methodist Church and First United Methodist Church, and was the oldest living member of either congregation at the time of their merging. She was also a “friendly visitor” with the Volunteer Action Center, and a member of the Ava Dorfman Senior Center.

She is survived by her children (and spouses) Sheila (Mrs. George) Shank, Mary Ellen Zalay, Thomas P. (and Lisa) Schaller, Jr., Mark D. Schaller, Cynthia (Mrs. Philip) Norman, and Karen (Mrs. Arthur) Bickford; as well as 13 grandchildren and 19 great-grandchildren; and one brother Merle Bates. Ellen was preceded in death by her parents and husband, as well as brothers Emerson, Clayton and Stanley, an infant brother Charles and an infant sister Genevieve.

Funeral service will be held 2 p.m. Friday at Prince-Boyd and Hyatt Home for Funerals, Inc., 210 West Court St., Rome. Pastor Thomas P. Schaller, Jr. will be officiating. Interment will be at St. Mary’s Cemetery. Relatives and friends may call Friday at the Home For Funerals from 1 to 2 p.m.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be given to the American Heart Association, or a charity of one’s choice.
