A Drone 1.0 STEM (science, technology, engineering, math) Summer Camp including students ages 13-18 is being held today through Friday, including activities at Mohawk Valley Community College in Utica and concluding at Griffiss airport on Friday.

Partnering to offer the event are the Air Force Research Laboratory Information Directorate, the New York UAS (unmanned aerial systems) Test Site at Griffiss airport, Mohawk Valley Community College, Griffiss Institute and AX Enterprize, LLC.

The camp focuses on UAS concepts that combine classroom training and hands-on experience, with classroom instruction on safe use and scientific principles of flight, said Griffiss Institute.

Students will assemble a quadcopter and learn the science of aerodynamics and radio-controlled vehicles. The camp is designed to excite students’ interest in STEM, focusing on aviation and the growing UAS field, and will introduce them to local employment opportunities in those fields.

At the concluding capstone event Friday at Griffiss at the NUAIR nose dock, students will fly their drones through an obstacle course. Sessions at MVCC will include flight simulations plus building and test-flying drones.
