Driver ticketed after crash into corrections van, law enforcers say
ROME — A 79-year-old driver was ticketed after he ran a red light and crashed into a New York State Department of Corrections van in Rome Monday morning, according to the New York State Police.
Troopers said George L. Cramer, of Rome, was eastbound on Route 365 shortly after 11 a.m. Monday when he failed to stop for the red light at Lamphear Road. Troopers said Cramer’s 2018 Honda CRV crashed into a 2016 Chevy van, driven by Carmelo Catalano, 56, of Rome.
The crash caused the Department of Corrections van to overturn and land on its roof in the middle of Lamphear Road, troopers said. Catalano was treated at Rome Health for non-life threatening injuries. Authorities said the Department of Corrections van was empty aside from the driver.
Cramer was ticketed for failure to yield and he is scheduled to appear in Rome City Court, troopers said. He was not injured.
