TOWN OF VERONA — A 95-year-old man has died following a two-vehicle collision on Route 365 Saturday afternoon, according to local law enforcement officials.
Three other people were hospitalized, the law enforcers added.
Sheriff’s deputies said Alden Vierow, 95, of Whitesboro, was southbound on Blackmans Corners Road shortly before 1 p.m. when he crossed Route 365 and his 2013 Hyundai Sonata crashed into the side of an eastbound 2016 Jeep Grand Cherokee, driven by Gregory Regulbuto, 71, of Canastota.
Deputies said Vierow failed to yield the right of way, and driver inattention was a factor in the collision.
The crash pushed both vehicles off the south shoulder into a snowbank.
Vierow was taken to St. Elizabeth Medical Center in Utica with stomach and lower back pain, along with minor cuts, authorities said. Deputies said Vierow’s injuries worsened in the ambulance and he died later at the hospital. An autopsy is scheduled to determine his cause of death, authorities stated.
Regulbuto and two passengers, 71-year-old Lynda Kuhry, of Syracuse, and E. Regulbuto, 67, of Canastota, were all taken to Rome Memorial Hospital for pain and injuries, deputies said.
The crash remains under investigation.
