Drama depicts actress in her later years

Cinema Capitol, 230 W. Dominick St., will present the biographical drama “Film Stars Don’t Die in Liverpool” from Friday to Thursday.

Based on Peter Turner’s memoir of the same name, “Film Stars Don’t Die in Liverpool” follows the playful but passionate relationship between Turner (Jamie Bell) and the eccentric Academy Award-winning actress Gloria Grahame (Annette Bening) in 1978 Liverpool. What starts as a vibrant affair between a legendary femme fatale and her young lover quickly grows into a deeper relationship, with Turner being the person Gloria turns to for comfort. However, illness tests their passion and lust to the limits. The movie also stars Vanessa Redgrave, Julie Walters, Kenneth Cranham, Stephen Graham and Frances Barber. It features original music by Elvis Costello.

At the 71st British Academy Film Awards, the movie received three nominations: Best Actress (Bening), Best Actor (Bell) and Best Adapted Screenplay. Meanwhile, Bell was awarded the New Hollywood Award at the Hollywood Film Awards, and was nominated for Best Actor at the British Independent Film Awards.

The Hollywood Reporters writes “There is no denying the emotional force that this film develops, and for that, we can credit talented filmmakers and two stars working at the height of their powers.” The St. Louis Post-Dispatch also writes “Bening is outstanding as a woman who fears that her fame and beauty are slipping away, and Bell brings to his character a heartbreaking vulnerability.”

“Film Stars Don’t Die in Liverpool” runs 105 minutes and is rated R (for language, some sexual content and brief nudity). Admission is $7, $6 for students and military and $5 for Capitol Friends. Tickets are available at the door and in advance from the Capitol Theatre box office (315-337-6453) and online at www.romecapitol.com.
