Donald James Smith


Donald James “Booty” Smith, 91, of Rome, passed away peacefully on July 3, 2018 at Sitrin Health Care Center in New Hartford, surrounded by family.

Donald was born in Rome on June 15, 1927, to Anthony Thomas and Doris Marie Coleman Smith. He was married to his high school sweetheart, Ellen Jane Howe, from 1953 until her passing in 2008.

An athlete throughout his life, Donald graduated from Rome Free Academy and Colgate University, where he played on the national championship hockey team in 1948. He played hockey semi-professionally for the Clinton Comets from 1950-1952, and was inducted into the Rome Sports Hall of Fame in 1999.

Donald began his career at Utica Drop Forge, where he worked as a human resource manager. He was employed at Griffiss Air Force Base in Rome for 27 years, first as Training Specialist and eventually as a Personnel Director.

He loved the outdoors, particularly fly fishing, small game hunting, and snowmobiling. He was an avid golfer.

Donald is survived by his three sons and daughters-in-law, David and Karla Smith of Dallas TX, Stephen and Mickey Smith of Utica, NY, and Thomas and Nancy Smith of Rochester NY; grandchildren, Kelly Smith-Holbourn (Trevor), Robert Smith, Mark Smith, Melissa Marmion (Mike), Alec Smith (Lisa), Emily Smith, Abigail Smith, and Trevor Smith; and great-grandchildren Bella Smith and Barrett Smith. He was predeceased by his wife, Ellen, and his brother and sister, Robert and Mary.

The family would like to thank the staff at Sitrin Health Care Center for the care they showed to Donald.

A memorial service will be held Barry Funeral Home, 807 West Chestnut Street, Rome at 11 a.m. on Saturday July 7, 2018. Burial will be in Rome Cemetery at the convenience of the family.
