AVA — A Rome man is accused of threatening a woman with a weapon and choking her during a domestic dispute in Ava, according to the Oneida County Sheriff's Office.

Deputies said Robert J. Burke, 33, of Rome, was involved in a domestic dispute with a woman at a residence in Ava in late August. Deputies said Burke was armed with a weapon and threatened the woman, and he also choked her at some point during the dispute.

At least four children were also present in the residence at the time, authorities stated. Burke was also in violation of an order of protection.

Burke was taken into custody on Wednesday on one count each of first-degree contempt, third-degree possession of a weapon, both felonies, second-degree unlawful imprisonment, second-degree menacing, criminal obstruction of breathing, second-degree harassment and four counts of endangering the welfare of a child, deputies said. Burke is scheduled to appear in court.
