Designated hitter Ben Minicozzi went 3-for-4 with a single, double and triple, drove in a pair of runs and scored twice to lead Smith Post past Utica Post, 9-7, on Monday night in a District V American Legion baseball game at Rome Free Academy Stadium.
Minicozzi was a home run shy of the cycle. Damon Campanaro and Riley Brawdy tallied two hits each and Campanaro scored three runs as Smith improved to 9-4. Utica dropped to 10-4. Smith trails Utica by one-half game in the Navy Division.
The Romans won despite committing five errors.
Derek Switzer pitched 6 1/3 innings to notch the win. He gave up seven runs (only two earned), six hits, two walks and struck out three.
Smith visits New Hartford Post Wednesday in a 6 p.m. start.
Oriskany downs Clonan
Oriskany Post pounded out 10 hits en route to a 11-2 victory over host Clonan Post.
Oriskany, which raised its record to 8-6, was paced offensively by Jeffrey Sobel with three hits. Ryan Enos had two hits including a double, while Ryan Enos, Matt Enos and Carl Graziadei scored two runs apiece. Aaron Drake added a double and a pair of RBIs and Jacob Beer stole two bases.
Beer pitched a complete game five-hitter to record the win. He yielded two earned runs, three walks and struck out three.
Oriskany visits Moran/Sylvan Beach Post tonight at 5:30 at Camden Yards.
Helmuth-Ingalls Post of Clinton was held to three hits in falling to host New Hartford Post, 12-2.
Wyatt Becker suffered the loss on the bump for 3-11 Helmuth-Ingalls. Justin Matteson had a double in the loss.
Helmuth-Ingalls hosts Utica tonight at 6 at DeLutis Field.
