VERONA — The sixth annual Fred Scherz Sr. Memorial Scholarship for Volunteer Community Service was announced by Verona town councilman Fred “Fritz” Scherz Jr. The deadline to apply is May 11.
The $250 scholarship will be awarded to a Verona student who is on track to graduate from high school by June 30, has lived in the town since at least Dec. 1, and is voluntarily engaged in community service or has created a community project.
Scherz plans to self-fund the scholarship in honoring his father’s memory, and said he feels “if students get started in volunteering at a younger age, they’ll continue to do so once they’re out of school.” The councilman said that he believes “volunteerism is a great thing for any community,” and noted his father “truly believed in giving back to his community, and took pride in helping many people.”
