Crue tribute plays fan favorites
ONEIDA — Wildside, the east coast’s premier Motley Crue tribute act, brings their looks that kill to the stage at 8 p.m. Friday, Jan. 20 at the Kallet Civic Center, 159 Main St.
The group features Peter Brown on lead vocals, Xavier Frey on lead guitar, Chris Saes on bass and Eddie Patterson on drums.
For more than a decade, the Long Island-based hair metal rockers have relived the Crue classics from the 1980s on, fueled by a passion for great music and good times.
“We have a lot of fun together on stage,” Frey said. “We are here to party. Motley Crue has always been on the crazy side and that helps us keep it light. We have a lot of fun and this is kind of like a carnival for all of us.”
Frey is the sole founding member currently in the band. He recalled he started playing guitar at the age of 13, concentrating for the majority of his musical career on writing original music mostly, with only a few cover songs thrown in. That has all changed now after forming the Motley Crue tribute band, Frey said.
He intimated that when he decided on starting a tribute band, he narrowed it down to two choices at the time: Motley Crue and the Red Hot Chili Peppers, Frey went with the more flamboyant Crue.
“This is a band with a lot of hits,” Frey said. “I love the ‘80s hair metal bands.”
Wildside performs Crue favorites like “Kickstart My Heart,” “Looks that Kill,” “Girls, Girls, Girls,” “Home Sweet Home” and “Dr. Feelgood.” They don’t concentrate on reenacting the spandex-wearing mid-1980s era of the Crue, though - Frey said they actually don the look of the 2008-2010 era.
The band enjoys meeting with their passionate fans and takes the time to pose for photos and make personal connections after every concert, Frey said.
He said one of his favorite songs to play live is “Girls, Girls, Girls” while “Home Sweet Home” doesn’t quite make it for himself personally. But rather than playing the songs the band likes to play, they perform what the audiences want to hear, he promised.
“I really play for the audience because what drives me on stage is the energy of the people and not the song I’m playing,” Frey explained. “When the audience is into it, we all perform at a whole different level.”
Tickets are $15 in advance or $20 at the door if still available. Local classic rock band Before August will open the show. Doors open at 7 p.m.
