Crockett sweeps to Oneida Invite wins


Rome Free Academy’s Sarah Crockett swept to victories in the shot put and discus throw during Friday’s Oneida Invitational Track and Field Meet.

The senior won the discus throw with a distance of 123 feet, 6 inches, and took the shot put with a throw of 40-2. Teammate Grace Isherwood, a junior, finished third in the shot put with a throw of 31 feet, 5 inches.

Also for the RFA girls squad, freshman Tailyn Frost was second in the pentathlon and sophomore Gianna Capoccia was third in the 1,500-meter run.

Rome’s 400-meter relay of Trinity Clark, Amara Jowers, Danielle Lince and Johari Taylor placed third.

Vernon-Verona-Sherrill senior Corey Couture swept to wins in the boys 200- and 400-meter sprints, setting a school record in the 200 with a time of 21.9 seconds.

Boys and girls team results were unavailable at press time.

RFA lacrosse squads win

The RFA boys and girls lacrosse teams both got wins at home, the boys over Indian River 16-5 and the girls over New Hartford 20-8.

Noah Hammon scored nine goals with an assist to lead the boys to a non-league victory. The Black Knights raced out to a 6-1 first quarter lead and were up 13-2 by the half.

Chris Orton scored four times and added an assist for RFA. Justin Hoke had three goals and four assists. Caleb Frey had two assists. Keyshawn Clark, Pete Sciortino and Jared Hussey had an assist each.

Andy Barber made six saves in the win.

With the win, the Knights improved to 7-8 overall and qualified for the Class A sectional tournament.

The RFA girls were led by Sydney Stamboly with seven goals.

The Black Knights were up 10-4 by halftime in the Tri-Valley League win.

Kaitlyn Salce had four goals and two assists and Hailey Millington had three goals and two assists. Jace Hunzinger and Jamie Fleck each scored twice and had an assist. Abigail Minicozzi and Haley Gallagher each scored once. Drew Kopek and Caroline D’Aiuto had one assist each.

In goal for RFA, Callie Ott made three saves for the win.

Softball tourney canceled

RFA’s Sally Page Memorial Softball Tournament scheduled to be held today at the Kost Field Complex was canceled due to wet field conditions.
