Cree Inc. has nearly finished the foundation of its semiconductor fabrication facility that they began in March and is beginning vertical construction, the company announced.
Two cranes are on the site to begin installing roof trusses and put steel columns into place. The last pouring of concrete for the main building’s foundation is expected later this week, and work has begun on the central utility and administration buildings nearby.
Cree hopes to open the facility next spring and eventually employ more than 600 people making silicon carbide components used in a variety of industries, including electric vehicles, electricity transmission, power generation and others.
The North Carolina-based company has 30 full-time employees in New York and 24 interns from universities throughout the state, and has job openings listed, including engineering and technician positions.
