Crash victim air-lifted to hospital

WESTMORELAND — A motor vehicle passenger was air-lifted to a Syracuse hospital in critical condition following a two-vehicle collision on Route 26 Thursday afternoon.

Sheriff’s deputies said Claude Crowell, 46, of Rome, was southbound on Route 26 at about 3:50 p.m. when he attempted to make a left turn onto Skinner Road.

Deputies said Crowell’s 2008 Chrysler van crossed in front of an oncoming 2016 Chevy van, driven by Ashlee Rubyor.

A passenger in Crowell’s van, 35-year-old James Gonzalez, of Vernon, was seriously injured in the crash, authorities said. He was flown by Mercy Flight helicopter to University Hospital in Syracuse, where authorities said he was listed in critical condition.

Rubyor was taken to St. Elizabeth Medical Center in Utica with minor injuries, authorities said, and Crowell was treated at the scene.

Crowell was ticketed for failure to yield and is scheduled to appear in Town Court, deputies stated.
