COPENHAGEN — Several milk cows were killed in a barn fire in Lewis County Thursday night. Fire officials said the fire started in the free stall cow barn at Kennell Farm at 8711 Route 12 at about 11:50 p.m. Officials said a farm employee saw the fire near a compressor and managed to get a few of the cattle out, but most of the milk cows perished in the blaze.
Responding volunteers from six fire departments found the barn fully involved. The barn was a total loss. Authorities said the cause of the fire remains under investigation. The property owner is insured.
The Copenhagen, West Carthage, Rutland, Lowville, Castorland and Martinsburg fire departments responded.
