COVID-19 Hero program launches Oneida County lawmakers’ effort seeks nominations from public to recognize community members

The Oneida County Board of Legislators recognizes that there have been many acts of kindness, concern, compassion, generosity and courage through the COVID-19 pandemic.

Now, the board seeks to recognize county residents who created hope for others during the pandemic.

“There are the staffers at health care facilities who held many hands when family members were unable to because of restrictions. There are the first responders and essential workers who remained on the job throughout the crisis. Then too there are individuals, groups, organizations, charities, neighbors and others that did so much to ensure the safety and well-being of county residents,” notes a release.

“We are reaching out to you, our community members, to hear your stories about something significant that occurred to you or you witnessed during the pandemic,” said Legislator Mary Austin Pratt, R-16, New Hartford. “We know there are many.”

Pratt chaired the committee of legislators that put together the recognition program. Besides Pratt, the members were Majority Leader George Joseph, R-10, Westmoreland, Brenda McMonagle, R-12, Rome, Minority Leader Philip Sacco, D-9, Deerfield, and Anthony Leone, D-23, Utica.

“We encourage your nominations to enable us to recognize these special moments, whether it be an individual, a special family, a group such as a nursing unit or some other entity,” said Legislature Chairman Gerald J. Fiorini, R-7, Rome. “We would like to recognize those nominated and welcome them to our meeting chamber in the near future.”

The deadline for nominations is Friday, Dec. 10.
