Corrections officials say drugs, homemade weapon found in Rome prison

Quantities of synthetic marijuana and a homemade weapon were seized from inmates in three separate occasions inside the Mohawk Correctional Facility in Rome.

According to the New York State Correctional Officers & Police Benevolent Association:

• On March 31, synthetic marijuana was found inside homemade cigarettes in the living quarters of an inmate.

• On April 2, an inmate frisk uncovered several sheets of paper coated in synthetic marijuana wrapped inside a bundle of cellophane in an inmate’s pocket. A second cellophane bundle with loose paper sheets was found in the inmate’s sock.

• Also on April 2, a search of an inmate’s living quarters uncovered both an ice pick-type weapon hidden in the inmate’s boot and a paper bundle coated in synthetic marijuana in the inmate’s sock.

Authorities said all three inmates were placed in special housing pending proceedings. The drugs were seized as evidence.
