MARCY — Five corrections officers were injured, including three hospitalized, after an inmate at the Mid-State Correctional Facility faked a suicide to lure them into his cell, according to the New York State Correctional Officers & Police Benevolent Association.

Authorities said the inmate, whose identity was not released, blocked visibility into his cell with a towel on May 8, then refused to remove the towel when officers demanded it. Authorities said the corrections officers were able to see inside through the door hatch and saw the inmate in a shower with a cloth tied around his neck.

The corrections officers forced their way into the cell, at which point authorities said the inmate ambushed them and attacked. Three officers wrestled with the inmate and were eventually able to get him cuffed and shackled with back-up.

The inmate is serving an 11-year sentence after being convicted of robbery and assault in Oneida County in 2014, officials said. Following an investigation, authorities said they believe the inmate was faking a suicide to lure officers into his cell.

The officers suffered various cuts, bruises and swelling, and one officer was bitten on the arm, authorities said. Five officers suffered injuries in total, and three officers were treated for their injuries at St. Elizabeth Medical Center in Utica.
