Cooperative Extension workshop to explore large-scale composting
MORRISVILLE — There will be a Farm and Commercial Scale Composting Workshop from 1-4 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 16 at the Cornell Cooperative Extension Madison County Ag Center, 100 Eaton St.
Between rising fertilizer prices and growing interest in reducing food and farm waste, composting is a hot topic, with lots of potential for farmers and producers. Join Gregory Gelewski, deputy director of the Madison County Department of Solid Waste, to learn some of the ins and outs of composting on larger scale farm and commercial operations.
This session covers:
- Technologies and methods for commercial and “farm” scale composting, including the basic biology and chemistry principles behind composting principles.
- Regulatory requirements and operating exemptions, along with some of the Food Safety and Modernization Act implications for those growing and distributing food crops with farm-made compost.
- How composting fits in with the “new” Farm Bill and the “Fertilizer Product Expansion Program.”
- Some of the state and federal initiatives, USDA and NRCS practices, and other funding mechanisms that might be available for compost production and use.
- Potential business and growth opportunities for targeting food wastes.
The session is free, but pre-registration is required online at: www.bit.ly/3wJmmf1.
