Contractor charged with grand larceny

NEW HARTFORD — A contractor is accused of stealing construction materials from an active job site in New Hartford.

Police said Robert E. Carey, 49, of Sauquoit, was hired by a homeowner for a renovation project in 2018. During the work, police said the homeowner noticed some of the construction materials were missing, and he contacted law enforcement in July 2018.

Police said Carey was taking the materials and returning them to the store for cash, without permission from the homeowner. A warrant was issued for Carey’s arrest and he was taken into custody earlier this month, authorities stated. Carey is charged with one count each of fourth-degree grand larceny and first-degree falsifying business records, both felonies, police said. He is scheduled to appear in Town Court.
