Conflagration consumes Lee Center barns

LEE CENTER — A massive fire on Hawkins Corners Road in Lee Center Thursday evening spread across several farm buildings.

The alarm was raised at 5:31 p.m. for the blaze at the Tuttle Farm at 5987 Hawkins Corners Road, just west of Hawkins Corners in the Town of Lee and near the intersection with Holmes Road. Volunteers from at least nine area fire departments responded to assist with the firefight.

At least two, possibly three, barns on the farm were engulfed in bright orange flame as crews worked to keep the fire from spreading across the farm. Thick black smoke could be seen for miles around the area.

Scores of livestock were lost in the fire.

Pouring rain pelted firefighters as they worked to contain the spread. It was not immediately known if anyone was injured in the fire. The farmhouse was believed to have been spared.

Crews worked into the night fighting the fire.

The Lee Center, Lake Delta, Rome, Western, Taberg, West Leyden, Boonville, McConnellsville, Vienna and Floyd fire departments responded.
