Comets snap six-game AHL slide with overtime victory


UTICA — Adam Comrie scored off a rebound in the slot with two minutes to go in overtime on Friday night to lift the Utica Comets to a 3-2 American Hockey League victory over the Springfield Thunderbirds at the Utica Memorial Auditorium.

Patrick Wiercioch had the lone assist on the winning goal as the Comets snapped their six-game losing streak.

The Comets took a 1-0 lead in the opening period on a power-play goal by Cam Darcy at the 15:12 mark of the first period, beating Thunderbirds goaltender Harri Sateri. Cole Cassels and Wiercioch assisted.

Springfield tied the game at 1-1 on a goal by Anthony Greco with 11:58 to go in the second period before Comrie put the Comets back in front with a power-play goal less than three minutes later off of assists from Michael Chaput and Zack MacEwen.

Springfield pulled even in the third period with 7:11 remaining in regulation on a goal by Ed Wittchow.

Comets goaltender Thatcher Demko finished with 25 saves to improve his record to 20-10-6. 

Sateri stopped 27 shots for the Thunderbirds in a losing cause to fall to 10-6-1.

The Comets went 2-for-5 on the power play and killed off all five Springfield penalties.

The teams wrap up their home-and-home weekend series tonight at 7:05 in Springfield, Mass.
