Comets dominate Senators in road win
The Utica Comets bounced back from Friday’s home loss with a dominant 7-3 win on the road Saturday against the Belleville Senators. Seven players tallied a goal each for the Comets.
The Comets opened the scoring with a power-play goal by Zach Senyshyn, who planted himself in front Belleville goalie Kevin Mandolese and took advantage of a rebound off a shot by Nolan Stevens. The goal at 8:30 was also assisted by Jack Dugan. Utica extended the lead on the next shift when Graeme Clarke deflected a Tyler Wotherspoon point shot into the back of the net for his fourth goal of the season 27 seconds after the first goal.
Wotherspoon wasn’t done putting his name on the scoresheet after his point shot bounced off a Senators defender into the net at 13:43. The goal gave Utica a 3-0 lead and was assisted by Dugan and Simon Nemec. Then it was Nemec who fired a shot into the net at 16:04 for his second goal of the year. The goal was scored at 16:04 and it was assisted by Tyce Thompson and Brian Pinho. With less than two minutes left in the period, the Senators finally solved Utica goalie Nico Daws when their leading goal scorer Rourke Chartier’s wrist shot rung off the post and in at 18:47. The period ended with the Comets holding a 4-1 advantage.
The Comets kept the scoring going, and it was Joe Gambardella at 1:37 who rushed into the Belleville zone and beat Mandolese for a 5-1 lead. The goal was assisted by Pinho and Thompson, who both registered their second assist of the contest.
Angus Crookshank redirected a pass into the net at 11:49 to cut the Utica lead to 5-2 on a power play. Just over one minute later, a shot by Egor Sokolov found room to squeeze behind Daws at 12:52. Utica led 5-3 as the second period ended.
In the final period of regulation, the Comets added two more goals. Nolan Stevens rifled a wrist shot just under the crossbar and into the net at 9:01. Brian Halonen deposited an empty net goal and the Comets skated away with a 7-3 victory.
Daws made 43 saves in the win.
Utica is now 7-7-3-1. The team is nine points out of first place in the North Division with three fewer games played than the first place Toronto Marlies.
The Comets continue to play away from home as they head to Rochester on Friday and Syracuse Saturday.
