Comets blanked in road loss

ROCHESTER — The Utica Comets were blanked 3-0 by the American Hockey League rival Rochester Americans on Wednesday night at Blue Cross Arena.

The Comets got 25 saves from goalie Marek Mazanec, but it wasn’t enough as Rochester goalie Scott Wedgwood stopped 28 shots.

The Amerks scored all three goals in a decisive third period.

CJ Smith broke the stalemate at the 8:48 mark of the third period during a delayed penalty to make it 1-0, while Taylor Leier’s breakaway strike at 14:20 doubled the deficit for the Comets.

Rochester put the game out of reach with their third goal of the night, courtesy of Victor Olofsson on the power play with less than three minutes remaining.

The Comets are back in action Friday night against the Springfield Thunderbirds. Puck drop at the Utica Memorial Auditorium is at 7 o’clock.
