COLLEGE NOTEBOOK: Locals lead MVCC women’s soccer team to 7-0 start

A Mohawk Valley Community College women’s soccer team led by two freshmen — former high school teammates Amber Piersma (Cassville/Mount Markham) offensively and Hannah Pcola (Cassville/Mount Markham) in goal — and sophomore Jazmyn Gillette (Mohawk/Central Valley Academy) entered this week a perfect 7-0-0 and ranked No. 3 in the country in the most recent NJCAA Division III poll.

This past weekend, Gillette had three goals and an assist and Pcola recorded MVCC’s sixth consecutive shutout in a 6-0 victory over Fulton-Montgomery Community College.

Piersma, the Hawks’ leading scorer with 13 goals and six assists, added a goal and an assist and Jordyn Squire (Poland) and Alexis Bates (Poland) also scored.

Earlier this season, Piersma had four goals and two assists in a win over Adirondack Community College. Gillette has seven goals and six assists, Bates also has seven goals, and Alyssa Shepherd (Sauquoit/Sauquoit Valley) has six goals and four assists.

MVCC entered the week ranked third in the country behind Dallas-Brookhaven and Delta College.

Le Moyne College senior goalkeeper Allison Moreau (Sauquoit/Sauquoit Valley) made five saves and recorded her third shutout of the season in a 0-0 draw with Saint Michael’s College. Moreau then made seven saves to help the Division II Dolphins upset No. 25 Franklin Pierce University 3-1 in a Northeast-10 Conference women’s soccer matchup Tuesday.

Cortland State’s Cam Stone (Ilion/Central Valley Academy) headed in a corner kick for her first goal of the season and the Red Dragons (5-0-3) remained unbeaten with a 4-0 women’s soccer win over SUNY Oswego.

Keuka College’s Parker Lahey (Whitesboro) scored her third goal of the season in the second half of a 1-1 tie with Nazareth College. The Wolves had lost 10 straight games to Nazareth.

Utica University’s Rory Richard (Barneveld/Holland Patent) scored her second goal of the season in a 6-0 win over Medaille College.

Johnson & Wales University’s Jordan Restivo (New Hartford) scored her league-leading ninth goal of the season and also had an assist in a 2-0 win over Connecticut College. Restivo leads Great Northeast Athletic Conference women’s soccer in scoring with 30 points on nine goals and 12 assists.

Trunfio strikes twice in field hockey win

Vassar College sophomore Gianna Trunfio (Clinton) scored twice for her nationally-ranked field hockey team and the Brewers beat RPI 5-1. Trunfio’s first goal broke a 0-0 tie just 20 seconds into the second quarter, and she later scored her fourth goal of the season to help Vassar improve to 6-2 overall.

SUNY Brockport goalie Ella Buchanan (Barneveld/Holland Patent) made a career-high 31 saves in a 2-1 win over Ithaca College. It was the Golden Eagles’ first field hockey win over Ithaca since 2011.

Houghton University sophomore Jace Hunzinger (Rome/RFA) assisted on all three goals in a 3-0 win over Elmira College. Hunzinger leads the Highlanders (6-2) with 14 points on three goals and eight assists.

SUNY Cortland’s Hanna Corrigan (Barneveld/Holland Patent) scored her third and fourth goals of the season to help the nationally-ranked No. 19 Red Dragons beat Brockport State 4-1.

SUNY Oswego Kaitlyn Mastracco (Rome/RFA) scored her eight goal of the season in a 4-1 loss to SUNY New Paltz.

Utica University’s Alanna Fragapane (Rome/RFA) had a goal and teammate Mackenzie Mix (Camden) had an assist in a 4-2 win over Washington & Jefferson. Goalie Lyla Cushman (Holland Patent) made three saves for the Pioneers.

Utica’s Roberts, Welker run to victories

First-place finishes by Utica University’s Michael Roberts (Remsen) and Gianna Welker (Rome/Oriskany) led their cross-country teams to victory in the SUNY Poly Wildcat Weekend Classic.

Roberts, a sophomore, won the men’s race with an 8K time of 28:04. Utica’s winning total also included a ninth-place finish by Hayden Lohmann (West Winfield/Mount Markham) in 29:47.
