Colgate swept out of ECAC hockey playoffs by Union


SCHENECTADY — The Colgate men’s hockey season came to a close on Saturday night as Union earned a 4-0 victory in the first round of the ECAC tournament.

The Dutchmen advanced after sweeping the best-of-three series.

The Dutchmen were first to get on the scoreboard for the second night in a row.

A pair of third=period goals by sealed Colgate’s fate as Union increased its lead to 2-0 with 10:38 remaining in regulation and again with 5:34 on the clock. The Raiders opted for an extra attacker nearing the end of the game but the Dutchmen scored on the empty net.

Freshman goaltender Mitch Benson made 27 saves on the night in the loss.

This season, he made 33 starts, more than any other rookie in the country.

Colgate ends the season with a 10-23-3 record, and a 7-12-3 mark in the ECAC.
