HOCKEY ROUNDUP: Colgate men’s hockey falls in ECAC semis; AIC advances in Atlantic Hockey tourney

LAKE PLACID — The Colgate men’s hockey team had a tough end to its ECAC Hockey conference tournament.

Top-seeded Quinnipiac scored two first-period goals and then added another in the third to hand fifth-seed Colgate a 3-1 setback on Friday in the ECAC Hockey semifinals at Herb Brooks Arena.

Griffin Lunn scored in the second period to make it a one-goal game for Colgate, which was making its first appearance in championship weekend in Lake Placid since 2015. The team lost 4-2 to Harvard in the championship that season. The tournament was altered last season and canceled in 2020 due to COVID-19 challenges. Colgate was without leading scorer Colton Young.

The Raiders, which have an 18-18-4 record, dropped a third consecutive game to the nationally-ranked No. 6 Bobcats.

Mitch Benson totaled 30 saves for Colgate.

Quinnipiac got first period goals from Joey Cipollone and Michael Lombardi for a lead they wouldn’t relinquish. Quinnipiac (31-5-3) advances to the championship for the fourth time since 2007.

AIC advances in Atlantic Hockey tourney

American International College scored three times in the third period in rallying over Mercyhurst in an Atlantic Hockey conference tournament semifinal game in Utica.

Blake Bennett capped a hat trick with the go-ahead goal and Elijah Barriga added insurance as AIC rallied and held off Mercyhurst 5-4 in a thrilling game at the Adirondack Bank Center.

Top-seeded American International College (21-12-3) outshot Mercyhurst 49-21 and led 2-1 before tying the game again early in the third period on Zak Galambos’ goal. Alec Calvaruso had 17 saves for AIC. AIC advances to the championship set for 7:35 p.m. Saturday at the Aud. RIT and Air Force faced off in the other semifinal Friday.

No. 7 seed Mercyhurst (16-19-4) had two goals from Rylee St. Onge and 44 saves from Kyle McClellan.
