Colgate hockey advances to conference semifinal
ITHACA — The Colgate men's hockey team defeated Cornell 2-1 at Lynah Rink on Sunday, a comeback win in the quarterfinal series.
Mitch Benson made 36 saves in net for Colgate, nearly pitching a shutout before giving up a goal in the final seconds of the game.
Ross Mitton sealed the win for Colgate when he got free on a breakaway. He put a move on the goalie before flipping a backhand shot into the net to make it 2-0 with 8:12 remaining in the third.
The Raiders' first goal came with 8:55 remaining in the second period. Josh McKechney won a faceoff draw in the right circle and made a pass across to Matt Verboon for a shot that he tapped past the Big Red's goalie.
Cornell put heavy pressure on Colgate at the end of the game after pulling its goalie. The Big Red got its only goal with seven seconds remaining when Ben Berard scored off a rebound in a scrum in front of the net to make it 2-1.
Cornell outshot Colgate 37-14.
The Raiders take on Quinnipiac in the ECAC semifinals in Lake Placid at 4 p.m. on Friday.
