Colgate has four-game hockey win streak snapped

HAMILTON — Colgate could not hold an early lead and lost to Merrimack 5-3 at home Saturday afternoon. The loss ended the Raiders' four-game win streak.

The Raiders had defeated Merrimack 2-1 in overtime Friday.

Colgate led 3-1 after two periods. But Merrimack surged ahead behind a four-goal third period.

Senior goalkeeper Andrew Farrier made 32 saves for the Raiders in the loss.

To open, Colgate junior forward Matt Verboon recorded his second goal of the year 1:37 in the opening period to give the Raiders early momentum.

The Raiders opened the second period with another quick score. Graduate senior forward Josh McKechney put the team up 2-0 1:30 into the frame. McKechney put in another with 20 seconds remaining in the period to give the Raiders some insurance. He was assisted by Nick Anderson and Alex Young, who set up McKechney's first goal as well.

Merrimack scored back-to-back goals in the third to knot things at 3-3 with 9:29 left in regulation. The Warriors got the next goal to take a 403 lead, then punctuated the day with an empty net goal.

Colgate welcomes Arizona State on Oct. 22 and 23, continuing a six-game homestand. The series is the first meeting between the Raiders and Sun Devils since 2016-17. Colgate leads the series 2-1-1. Both contests begin at 7 p.m. and will be live streamed on ESPN+.
