Colgate draws third-seeded Wisconsin

HAMILTON — It’s time to dance.

Colgate’s third trip to the NCAA Men’s Basketball Championship in four years pits the Raiders with Wisconsin in the Midwest Region on Friday at Fiserv Forum in Milwaukee.

Colgate is a 14 seed for the second consecutive season – matching its highest seed in the NCAA tournament in program history.

On the first-round draw against Wisconsin, head coach Matt Langel said, “The Big Ten is one of the best basketball conferences if not the single best conference in the country. Wisconsin has veteran, experienced players. They are extremely well coached and very disciplined – a lot of things that we’ve tried to model our program after – team over self and super consistent game in and game out.”

Colgate (23-11, 16-2 Patriot) clinched its third Patriot League championship in four years with last Wednesday’s 74-58 victory over Navy in the title game at Cotterell Court. The Raiders carry a program-record 15 game winning streak into the NCAA Tournament, which is the third-longest active win streak in the country.

Third-seeded Wisconsin (24-7, 15-5 Big Ten) finished the regular season with a share of the Big Ten title under head coach Greg Gard, who was named the Big Ten Coach of the Year. The Badgers have dropped their last two games, most recently a 69-63 loss to Michigan State in the Big Ten Tournament quarterfinals.

Colgate enters tournament action ranked second in the country in 3-point field goal percentage (40.3), fifth in total assists (584), seventh in total 3-point field goals made (337), and ninth in assists per game (17.2). The Raiders are making their fifth overall appearance in the tournament and third under Langel.

“I am super excited for the next step and for these guys to have the chance to play on this stage in this event with all of the fans,” Langel said. “This experience is what makes this time of year so special. To be a part of it and to be in a venue like Fiserv playing in front of a great crowd will be an awesome experience and one that I know our guys are excited about.”
