Clerk foils attempted robbery, troopers say

TOWN OF EATON — An attempted convenience store robbery was foiled in Madison County Tuesday night when the cashier recognized the would-be thief, according to law enforcement officials.

Oneida-based state police said Jeremy L. Cook, 22, of Eaton, entered the A-N-W EZ Mart store on Route 26 at about 11 p.m. armed with a knife. Troopers said Cook demanded money from the cashier, only for the cashier to immediately recognize Cook and refuse to hand over the money.

Troopers said Cook left empty handed and returned home, where he was later located and taken into custody.

Cook is charged with one count each of attempted first-degree robbery, a class B felony, and fourth-degree possession of a weapon, a misdemeanor, authorities said. He was arraigned in Town Court and was sent to Madison County Jail in lieu of $7,500 cash bail or $15,000 bond.

He is scheduled to reappear in court on Aug. 19.
