City takes ‘mulligan’ on first shot at Valley View renovations
UTICA — Proposed renovations for the Valley View Golf Course, 620 Memorial Parkway, are now on hold as projected costs have doubled from the original $2.8 million estimate. City officials are now taking a second shot at the plans in an effort to reduce its price tag.
The projected costs for the renovations, announced back in September, are now expected to exceed $5 million for the planned new grill room and bar, golf simulators, additional restrooms, an elevator for access to the main upper floor and an outdoor patio with a gas fireplace.
The increase in the estimated budget for renovations is due to a number of factors, officials said, such as supply chain issues and price increases in materials, leaving the construction bids to come back much higher than anticipated.
“It’s supply, it’s the cost of steel, it’s the cost of raw materials,” Utica Mayor Robert Palmieri explained. “We’re finding that no matter who we talk to in the construction industry is that the price of lumber is much higher, the price of goods, even if you can get the goods, is much higher. It was substantially more than even the architects anticipated so we went back to the drawing board and we’re trying to come up with something that will be palatable, affordable and still present a great product.”
City officials are looking at options of whether or not to scale back some of the originals amenities planned or, preferably, to find ways to make the planned renovations more affordable and obtainable. Palmieri added that the city does not want to scale back and take away too much from the original plans of what they are trying to achieve.
Funding for the renovations at Valley View are being provided by the Utica Prosperity Initiative, which provides funding allocated to the city from the American Rescue Plan Act.
