The leaves are no longer flying, but the city’s leaf collection crew is — with the bulk leaf pickup moving on to collect leaves on the Thursday Green Waste Route tomorrow, Friday, Nov. 15, city officials have announced.

Green waste is picked up the day before regular trash pickup in the city’s inside district.

Crews from the Department of Public Works will finish collecting leaves on the Wednesday Green Waste Route today, officials said, and have already completed its first passes of the Monday and Tuesday Green Waste Routes.

In the event that collection crews are needed for snow plowing during this period, the city will cease leaf collection and when weather permits continue where it had left off in the collection schedule, according to officials.

For information, call City Yard at 315-339-7778 weekdays between 7:30 a.m. and 4 p.m.

Among the program guidelines:

Leaves must be placed behind the curb, not in the street. Leaves raked into the street cause traffic problems and storm sewer backups.

Leaves raked to the curb or in containers should not have stones or rubbish mixed in with them.

Contractors are responsible for their own disposal, leaves put to the curb by contractors, will be left at the curb;

Acceptable containers include: Biodegradable paper lawn and leaf bags or clean trash cans;

Unacceptable containers include: Plastic garbage bags, cardboard boxes and the city issued garbage and recycling containers.

City of Rome residents who do not want to wait for leaf pickup may bring their leaves in containers or bags and empty them at the City Yard Green Waste Transfer Station on Race St. The hours of operation for disposal are 8 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. Monday through Friday and from 8 a.m. to noon on Saturday. Residents must provide a valid driver’s license and contractor’s are prohibited.
