UTICA — Five children —  ranging in age from 8 to 11 years old —  have been charged with causing  damage at the Sculpture Space art studio, according to the Utica Police Department.

Sometime between Friday and early Sunday morning, the group allegedly broke into the Sculpture Space art studio at 12 Gates St., and caused extensive amounts of damage, police said. They smashed windows, destroyed art projects and sprayed graffiti throughout the building.

Police said the children also stole several hundred dollars in cash, antique bicycles and other property.

On Sunday, police said they were dispatched to an auto repair shop on Oriskany Street for a report of several juveniles throwing rocks at the vehicles in the parking lot. Officers responded and said they found the youths throwing the rocks — and also spotted the antique bicycles parked nearby. Police said the children also had paint on their shoes that matched the spilled paint at Sculpture Space.

Following further investigation, the youths were charged with third-degree burglary, petty larceny, criminal possession of stolen property and criminal mischief, police said.

Their identities were not released due to their young ages. They were released on appearance tickets to Oneida County Probation.
