Joshua Wellenstein, PT, Cert. MDT, has joined the staff of Chestnut Commons Physical and Occupational Therapy, announced Rena Hughes, P.T., M.S., Cert. MDT, Director of Business Development and Rehabilitation Therapy Services.
Wellenstein is certified in the McKenzie method, a specialized protocol for treating neck and back pain. It involves assessment to determine the cause of the problem and treatment to help decrease pain quickly, restore function, and minimize the number of visits to a therapist.
“Back and neck pain are among the most common complaints we get from our patients,” said Hughes. “As a therapist, Josh combines his patient-centered philosophy with specialized clinical expertise to help his patients reduce their pain and discomfort as quickly as possible.”
“The McKenzie method is patient-based, with a large emphasis on active patient involvement and education,” explained Wellenstein. “I teach my patients techniques to prevent recurrences and specific exercises to help them alleviate symptoms if they do have a problem.”
“The McKenzie Method is very empowering for the patients,” he continued. “Because patients are able to learn about what is causing their pain and are well-equipped with techniques to alleviate it, they end up seeing results in days instead of weeks.”
Wellenstein has been helping people reduce pain and regain their mobility for 17 years.
He received both his bachelor’s and master’s degrees in physical therapy from Utica College. He returns to the Mohawk Valley after spending the past eight years working in Burlington, VT.
“I wanted to come back to the area to be closer to my family,” he explained. “I am really excited to join the staff at Chestnut Commons because we all share the common goal of helping patients return to their best possible functionality as quickly as possible.”
