VERONA — Charles “Pete” James, 81, of Verona, unexpectedly passed away on July 25, 2019.
Born in Durhamville on September 2, 1937, he was the son of Charles and Ethel Perry James. A lifelong resident of the area, Pete was a graduate of Oneida High School and earned both his Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees from SUNY Oswego where he was a member of Psi Phi Gamma. He married Jean Herringshaw in Wampsville on May 20, 1983.
Prior to his retirement, Pete was employed by Rome City School District as an Earth Science teacher. Additionally, he worked as a roofer during the summer months with his friend John. He also spent time as a referee for both high school and college wrestling matches. Pete was an avid hunter and fisherman and loved to tell anyone who would listen about his outdoors adventures. That man could certainly tell a story.
Along with his wife Jean of 32 years, Pete leaves behind three daughters and two sons-in-law, Beth Anne James of Reston, VA, Lisa (John) Markle and Lori (Derek) Barbano-Curtis, all of Oneida; two sons, Christopher James of Los Angeles, CA and Peter Barbano of Vernon Center; four grandsons, Brandon Barbano, Andrew Serianni, Aidan Serianni and Gavin Curtis; one sister-in-law, Jean James of Lebanon; nieces and nephews, John Schoeneck, Jim Schoeneck, Billy (Maggie) Schoeneck and Deb (Russ) Palmer; along with close friends, John Flisnik and David Shortell; and several other nieces, nephews, and family members. He was predeceased by his parents as well as his siblings, Michael James, Janet (Jack) Schoeneck and Larry James and a great-nephew, Max Schoeneck.
Per Pete’s wishes, a private ceremony for family and close friends will be held this week.
Interment will be made in St. Francis’ Cemetery, Durhamville.
