Memorial Day will be honored this weekend in a variety of parades and ceremonies throughout the Mohawk Valley. Local municipalities hosting events on Monday, May 29, observing the holiday include:

Canastota

The village of Canastota and American Legion Post #140 will host their annual Memorial Day parade and remembrance ceremony starting with the parade at 10 a.m. The parade steps off at the intersection of Wilson Avenue and North Peterboro Street and proceeds south on Peterboro Street through the village, ending at Clark Park, near the intersection with Route 5.

A public ceremony honoring members of the community who gave their lives in service to our county will take place immediately following the conclusion of the parade. Peterboro Street between Maple Avenue and Route 5 will be closed to all vehicles on the morning of the parade.

New Hartford

The New Hartford Volunteer Fire Department, the Village of New Hartford, the New Hartford Chamber of Commerce and Highway Superintendent Richard Sherman will hold their annual Memorial Day Parade and Open House.

The parade grand marshal is Bill Randall, a Vietnam War Army veteran and a 49-year member of the New Hartford Volunteer Fire Department.

The seven-division parade begins at 7 p.m. from the New Hartford Shopping Center, 120 Genesee St., and features the 10th Mountain Division Band from Fort Drum. It will proceed north on Genesee Street, turning right onto Pearl Street, left on Sanger Avenue and left onto Oxford Road, ending at the fire station. There will be no parking permitted along the parade route.

The fire department’s memorial room, with many new displays and photographs, will be open to the public following the parade. Both the parade and open house will be held rain or shine and refreshments will be served.

New York Mills

The New York Mills annual Memorial Day parade begins at 11 a.m. at Main and Elm streets and will proceed down Main Street to Pulaski Park. A memorial ceremony will take place once the parade ends at Veterans Memorial Park.

Remsen

The Remsen VFW, Remsen American Legion, Forestport Firefighters and Forestport town officials will host a Memorial Day Service at 9 a.m. at the Memorial Park in the hamlet of Forestport. The Legion and VFW members will then travel to Hinckley for a 10 a.m. service.

Remsen Memorial Post #982 VFW and George Glenn Hughes Post #890 American Legion will also host the annual Memorial Day ceremony in the Village of Remsen at 11 a.m. The ceremony will be held at the new Town of Remsen Veterans Memorial located at the Veterans Memorial Park off Steuben Street behind the Remsen Post Office.

Any group or organization that would like to take part in the Monday ceremony in Forestport or Remsen are asked to be at the locations 10 minutes before the ceremony.

Rome

The Henry P. Smith Post #24 American Legion will host a small ceremony at the Legion at 325 Erie Blvd. West starting at 8:30 a.m., following by a visit to Henry P. Smith’s gravesite at the St. Peter’s Cemetery on East Dominick Street. These small services are open to the public.

At 10:30 a.m., the Legion will hold their annual Memorial Day service at Veteran’s Memorial Park in the 200 block of S. James St. This event is also open to the public. The Legion will read off the names of the Rome servicemen who have died in the past year and there will be a laying of wreaths, along with other remembrances. This event will last roughly one hour.

At 2 p.m., the New York State Vietnam Veterans Memorial Fund will hold a ceremony at the memorial at Route 825 and Ellsworth Road, at the Huey helicopter. It is advised to bring your own chair.

Sherrill

Sherrill American Legion Post 230’s ceremony begins at 8 a.m. at the Middle Road Cemetery. The Memorial Day parade line-up is at 8:45 a.m. in the Community Activity Center parking lot, 139 E Hamilton Ave, with the parade beginning at 9 a.m. to proceed to Triangle Park for a ceremony. Afterwards, all are welcome back to the post for refreshments and doughnuts.

Utica

The annual Memorial Day Parade is at 10 a.m. starting across from St. Elizabeth’s Medical Center, 2209 Genesee St. The parade heads north to turn right onto Memorial Parkway and end at the Parkway Recreation Center, 220 Memorial Pkwy.

No grand marshal was named for the Memorial Day parade as the event will honor all military members who have made the ultimate sacrifice for their country.
