Staff Sgt. Michael Carson, an airman with the Rome-based Eastern Air Defense Sector, is the New York Air National Guard’s Honor Guard Program Manager of the Year, according to EADS.

A computer systems technician with the 224th Support Squadron, Carson volunteered to lead the Honor Guard as an additional duty.

As program manager, he trained and supervised 15 airmen, coordinated 35 funeral details and 28 color guard events, and orchestrated honor guard support for assumption of command and retirement ceremonies.

Carson will now go on to compete against other state winners for the overall Air National Guard award, EADS said.

“Being named the best Honor Guard program manager in an organization as large as the New York Air National Guard is a remarkable accomplishment,” said Col. Paul M. Bishop, 224th Air Defense Group (ADG) Commander. “On behalf of everyone in the unit, I want to publicly congratulate Staff Sgt. Carson. He has spent countless hours of personal time performing honor guard duties and this award is recognition of that selfless dedication.”

The 224th ADG is comprised of the 224th Air Defense Squadron and 224th Support Squadron, located in Rome, and Detachment 1 and Detachment 2 that serve in the Washington, D.C. area. The 224th ADG provides the forces to conduct EADS’ mission, which includes being responsible for the air defense of the eastern U.S.
