Camden teens organize for Kentucky relief efforts

CAMDEN — Six Camden student-athletes will travel to Kentucky during February break to aid in relief efforts in the wake of the tornadoes that hit the area on Dec. 10.

Will Carver, Lizzy Lucason, Dillan Melchiore, Ivy Murphy, Joe Doran and Nate Hurd have organized an effort to spend their break near Mayfield, Ky.

The group will depart on Saturday, Feb. 19. En route they’ll make a stop to compete in a track meet in Youngstown, Ohio under the banner of the Camden Country Running Club. They will then continue on to their destination, where they will participate in cleanup and rebuilding efforts for eight to 10 hours a day throughout the week. They will head home on Friday, Feb. 25.

The group has been in contact with area church groups about providing assistance.

To help raise money for this endeavor, the students have received donations and also hosted a bottle-and-can drive. Monetary donations are in the care of Diane Reed and the Camden Cross Country Booster Account. Donations can be sent via check to: Camden Cross Country, C/O Diane Reed, 3176 Powell Road, Blossvale NY 13308.

Funds will be used toward the cost of the trip and to relay donations to area groups coordinating relief efforts. The students will need work gloves and boots. In addition, the group is also seeking donations of beverages and sealed food items, such as canned goods or snacks. Pick-up of those donations can be arranged by contacting coach Phil Lucason at 315-709-9958.
