Camden squad and two RFA wrestlers claim crowns


The Camden wrestling squad captured the Section III Division II championship on Saturday at Onondaga Community College’s SRC Arena and a pair of Rome Free Academy wrestlers won Division I crowns.

The Blue Devils garnered 140.5 points in Division II, while rival Central Valley Academy had 126.5 points to place second. Holland Patent finished sixth with 78.5, Adirondack was seventh with 75, Vernon-Verona-Sherrill placed 18th with 35, South Lewis finished 23rd with 29 and Oneida was 34th with one.

RFA finished fifth in Division I with a score of 103. Fulton won with 267 points.

Seniors Stephan Hildrenbrandt at 152 pounds and Spencer Pisaneschi at 285 each claimed sectional crowns for the Black Knights and qualified for the state meet.

Hildrenbrandt defeated Auburn’s Hunter Duger 2-0, while Pisaneschi pinned all of his opponents including Fulton’s Samuel Jones in 1 minute and 58 seconds in the finals.

Junior Marc Darcangelo placed fourth at 160 for the Black Knights, while eighth-grader Ashton Thompson was fifth at 99. Freshman Justin Wright at 106, junior James Faso at 132 and freshman Jonathan Walston at 182 each placed sixth.

Camden had no individual winners, but had three wrestlers place second in the finals. Devin Coleman was edged by CVA’s Mason Bush 3-1 at 99, Tybarius Harter lost to Cahal Donovan of Marcellus 10-2 at 132 and Riley Gerber fell to New Hartford’s Ian McKenna 8-5 at 138. Placing fourth for the Blue Devils were Hunter Williams at 113, Colby Johnson at 145, Michael Bristol at 170 and John Mitchell at 182.

Adirondack’s Kevin Spann won at 126 pounds with a 4-0 defeat of Cazenovia’s Matt McLaughlin in the finals. Bryar Croniser finished fourth for the Wildcats at 106.

TJ Philpotts placed second for HP at 145. He was edged by CVA’s Hunter Shaut 2-1 in a second tiebreaker in the finals. Nick Herringshaw and Bryce Dare placed third for the Golden Knights at 160 and 182 respectively.

Kyle Greene finished third at 138 for South Lewis.

Placing fourth for VVS were Ian O’Neil at 138 and Jeremiah Brunje at 160.

Camden at ski event

Athletes from the Camden nordic ski team traveled to Winona Forest in Mannsville, Jefferson County, on Saturday to compete at the 2018 Winona Forest Tour-a-thon Cross County Ski Race.

They all raced in the 12.5-KM classic event. Haley Hinds and Alex Williams both had the fastest times of the race for all age categories. In total nine medals were won by the team.

Bulldogs eliminated

The fourth-seeded Westmoreland girls volleyball team ended its season with a Section III Class C quarterfinal loss to visiting, fifth-seeded Sandy Creek in straight sets, 25-17, 25-16 and 25-9.

The Bulldogs, who finished their season at 17-4, were guided by Brooke Taverne with 19 digs, four blocks and two kills.

Oneida sweeps Little Falls

The Oneida boys volleyball squad swept host Little Falls 25-22, 25-12 and 25-10.

Drew Fiedler paced the 9-3 Indians with two aces, four kills, 27 assists and three digs.

Redskins routed

In girls basketball action, Oriskany ended its regular season with a 66-27 non-league loss at Tully.

The Redskins, who are 15-5 overall, trailed 37-8 at halftime.

Oriskany was led by Matteson Hunt with nine points.
