UTICA — Assemblywoman Marianne Buttenschon, D-119, Marcy, will serve as honorary chair for the 2021 Utica Salvation Army Red Kettle Campaign.

Details of this year’s campaign were announced during a kick-off press conference on Wednesday, Nov. 24, at the Utica State Office Building.

“The holidays are supposed to be a joyous time for families to come together and celebrate,” said Buttenschon. “However, for families going through financial struggles, it can be a very difficult and stressful time.”

“I am honored to serve as honorary chair for the Salvation Army of Utica’s 2021 Red Kettle campaign because of the impact they have on this community,” She added.

“The Salvation Army has had a presence in Oneida County for more than 130 years, and last year alone served over 2,000 families in the Greater Utica Area during the holiday season,” Buttenschon said, “that includes providing vouchers for food at the grocery store, warm clothes for our cold winters, and toys for families with children so they can have gifts to open on Christmas morning.

“If you see the Salvation Army bell ringers, whether it’s myself, my staff or anyone who is donating their time to help the Salvation Army this season, I encourage you to donate to the red kettle. It is because of the compassion and generosity of this community that Hope Marches On,” she said,

“The goal this year is $70,000,” said Captain Michael Harrington of the Utica Salvation Army. “We are praying that everyone who has a job, who has a roof over their head, and who can afford to buy toys for their children will dip into their pockets once again this year to help their neighbors in need. With the circumstances surrounding the COVID-19 pandemic continuing, we know that the need for help this year is greater than in years past.”

You can find The Salvation Army red kettles in Utica through Dec. 24. The red kettles accept digital payments like Apple Pay, Google Pay, Venmo, and PayPal. People can also text uticakettle to 41444 to donate.
