Buttenschon launches summer reading challenge
Assemblywoman Marianne Buttenschon, D-119, Marcy, announced the beginning of the New York State Assembly’s 2022 Summer Reading Challenge with a visit to Bellamy Elementary School in Rome.
Children and youth who demonstrate that they read for 15 minutes for 40 or more days during the months of July and August will receive a state Assembly Excellence in Reading Certificate.
“Too often, students fall months behind on their academic skills during the summer, frequent reading is incredibly important for youth to maintain and improve their intellectual abilities while school is not in session,” Buttenschon said. “Regular reading at an early age can expand vocabulary, improve brain connectivity, and encourage one to become a lifelong learner.”
“I encourage all youth to make an extra effort to pick up some good books and immerse themselves this summer, and I ask parents to encourage consistent summer reading,” the Marcy Democrat added.
The theme for this year’s challenge is “Oceans of Possibilities,” designed to celebrate all things water and ocean-related. Buttenschon has distributed summer reading packets to every elementary school and library in her district, her announcement said, adding that each packet included a brochure explaining the challenge and a calendar, along with a bookmark.
Youngsters use the calendar to mark off the days they read — and once they have completed 40 days or more, they submit the calendar to Buttenschon’s office and will receive their award.
Parents interested in the program should contact Buttenschon’s office at 315-732-1055.
