TOWN OF LENOX — A Madison County business-owner is accused of stealing from his own office after it was seized by the state Department of Tax and Finance.
Sheriff’s deputies said David T. Van Marter, 39, of North Highland Avenue, East Syracuse, was the owner of Syracuse Chimney and Stove on Route 31, until Feb. 5, when the business was seized by state agents of the Department of Tax and Finance. Authorities said Van Marter owed state taxes, leading to the seizure of the property and all items within the building.
After the seizure, deputies said Van Marter unlawfully re-entered the building and grabbed $1,100 worth of property from inside. Van Marter was taken into custody on Friday.
Van Marter is charged with one count each of third-degree burglary and fourth-degree grand larceny, both felonies, deputies said. He was arraigned in Town Court and was sent to county jail in lieu of $2,500 cash bail or $5,000 bond.
He is scheduled to reappear in court.
