NEW HAVEN — A school bus monitor was killed when the bus pulled into the path of an oncoming pickup truck at county routes 1 and 6 in Oswego County early Wednesday morning, according to the New York State Police.

Troopers said Mark T. Vosseller, 69, of Fulton, was driving a shorter length bus for Mexico Academy northbound on County Route 6 at about 6:30 a.m. Troopers said Vosseller failed to stop for a stop sign at the intersection with County Route 1, and the bus was struck on the passenger side by a westbound 2022 Dodge pickup truck, driven by Jonathan H. Duval, 45, of Mexico.

There were no students on the bus at the time of the crash, troopers noted.

A bus monitor, 63-year-old Theresa A. Steele, suffered a severe head injury in the crash and she was taken to University Hospital in Syracuse, troopers said. She later died from her injuries.

Both Vosseller and Duval were also treated at University Hospital for their injuries, authorities said. Vosseller was ticketed for failure to yield to a stop sign and is scheduled to appear in court, troopers stated.

The crash remains under investigation.
