TOWN OF LEE — No one was injured when a load of burning hay was dumped onto Elmer Hill Road Wednesday morning.

Sheriff’s deputies said truck driver John Collins, 38, of Rome, was hauling a load of hay in a 1998 Mack dump truck at about 11:48 a.m. when the exhaust from the truck caught the hay on fire. Deputies said Collins attempted to put the fire out, but it was spreading too quickly.

Authorities said Collins dumped the hay in the roadway in order to save his truck from burning.

The Lake Delta Fire Department responded and doused the smoldering piles of hay. The Town of Lee Highway Department assisted with a front end loader.

Elmer Hill Road was closed for a little over an hour. Deputies said nobody was hurt.
