FORESTPORT — An 8-acre brush fire off Round Lake Road Sunday afternoon was spotted by a passing airplane, according to local fire officials.

Authorities said a local pilot was flying over northeast Oneida County when he spotted a brush fire from his plane at about 5:45 p.m. The pilot notified the Boonville Fire Department, who then passed along word to 911.

The fire was in the Woodgate Fire Department’s district, but officials said they were busy assisting with a structure fire on Kayuta Lake. So the Otter Lake Fire Department was dispatched to the brush fire off Round Lake Road.

Otter Lake Fire officials said the wildfire had spread to about five acres on arrival, so crews took off-road vehicles to the scene. Officials said the volunteers used rakes and shovels to create some breaklines to stop the fire from spreading further.

The Woodgate fire department was able to join the fight and authorities said the joint effort was able to contain the fire to about seven or eight acres of brush and woodland.

The fire was declared under control by 8:30 p.m. Sunday.
