Brooklyn Pickle now open in Utica

UTICA — It’s kind of a big “dill.”

After a few construction delays and almost a year after announcing their intent to come here, Brooklyn Pickle opened the doors to their Utica location, 600 State St., on Monday.

Brooklyn Pickle is a well-known staple in the Syracuse area, known for its giant sandwiches, quick service, and — before establishing a location in Utica — being a destination in Syracuse for many people in the Mohawk Valley to visit before returning to the area.

"Normally it's stressful to open a restaurant, but I have enjoyed this whole process, other than the delays," said Brooklyn Pickle owner Craig Kowadla. "We're excited to be here. Utica, to me, is like a close-knit family-feel to it. It's a food town and we're really happy to be here and excited to feed everybody and meet new people, and we're just really excited to be a part of the revitalization that's going on down here."

Brooklyn Pickle's menu features a variety of sandwiches, subs and wraps, homemade soups, salads, desserts, and, of course, pickles. What sets the Utica location apart from the Syracuse locations is that it is the first Brooklyn Pickle restaurant to offer beer on its menu.

"When you are a city, you look for your national companies, you look for your regional companies and you look for your local companies, and he's [got] a regional company that really has got a great trademark," Utica Mayor Robert Palmieri said about Kowadla and Brooklyn Pickle. "The service to his customers, he delivers a product that is unparalleled by anyone else. He's bringing something to the city of Utica that, quite frankly, it'll stand by itself. We've got great eateries all over, but it fits in extremely well with our city."

The Utica location’s hours of operation are 10 a.m. to 8 p.m., Monday through Saturday.

Brooklyn Pickle currently has three locations in Syracuse, with Utica now being their fourth. A Brooklyn Pickle in North Carolina is expected to open this summer, becoming the first location outside of New York state.
