Brindisi keeps word with vote

Anthony Brindisi was sworn-in as the new representative in Congress of New York’s 22nd District, then cast his first vote as he had promised during his successful campaign: To not support Nancy Pelosi as speaker of the house.

The House held a roll-call vote in alphabetical order on Jan. 3 on choosing a speaker for the new term. Brindisi was the first Democrat to vote for someone other than Pelosi.

He spoke the name of former vice president and Delaware
senator Joe Biden.

“Today I kept my campaign promise to not support Nancy Pelosi for Speaker,” Brindisi said in a statement sent by his staff later Thursday.

“Now it’s time to get to work,” the statement added.

Brindisi had made the pledge to seek new leadership during the campaign against Republican incumbent Claudia Tenney through the district, where Republicans have a registration advantage over Democrats of nearly 42 percent to 35 percent.

Pelosi was elected speaker without the vote of Brindisi and of 14 other Democrats who named another person for speaker or did not vote.

“It’s time to end the Washington dysfunction and get to work,” Brindisi said.

“I’m ready to reach across the aisle and work with members of both parties to ensure quality, affordable health care, create good-paying jobs, and deliver results for the people of this
community,” the Utica Democrat added.
