UTICA — The Utica University men’s lacrosse team scored four times in the first quarter en route to an 8-4 season-opening non-conference win over Mohawk Valley foe SUNY Poly on Wednesday at Gaetano Stadium.

Utica’s Gage Fiacco scored two of his three total goals early in the opening quarter to help give the Pioneers a lead the team would not relinquish. It was the first win for interim head coach Justin Patterson, who took over the program after Mike Parnell died in December 2021.

Sam Serrano also had three goals for the Pioneers, who led 4-2 at halftime and scored three straight goals in the second half to maintain the lead. Connor Costanza added a goal and two assists while John Avery had a goal and an assist in support of Jon Goodspeed (14 saves).

Whitesboro graduate Andrew Maycock had a goal in the first quarter and New Hartford grad Amelio Ripa also scored in each half for the Wildcats (0-2 overall), who made an appearance in the NCAA Division III tournament last spring. Matthew Johnson had eight saves for SUNY Poly.

Rome Free Academy graduate Keshawn Clark added an assist for SUNY Poly. The team’s next game is 1 p.m. Saturday against Oswego. Utica is set to play its second of four straight home games to open the season against Hamilton College at 5 p.m. Tuesday.
