UTICA — The city of Utica, in collaboration with the Muslim Community Association of Mohawk Valley, the Slocum-Dickson Foundation and ICNARelief, will be hosting its annual book bag giveaway and free health screening event.

The event will take place today, Tuesday, Aug. 30, from 3 to 6 p.m. at Utica’s Hanna Park, 1 Kennedy Plaza.

The annual event comes just in time as local school districts are preparing for the school year to begin.

Members of the community are encouraged to attend, pick up book bags and supplies for children in need, as well as participate in the following free health screenings:

  • Blood pressure screening
  • Blood sugar screening
  • Lipid panel screening
  • Physician counseling
  • Stroke awareness

Special guests Utica Mayor Robert Palmieri, and Assemblywoman Marianne Buttenschon, D-119, Marcy, will be on site to visit and speak with their constituents.

“What makes Utica special and unique is that while we are a very diverse community, we always show compassion and generosity to each other. In that spirit, the Muslim Community Association of Mohawk Valley has been a great community partner through its annual back pack and school supply giveaway. I thank them for their continued efforts and organizing this worthy initiative.”
