Community sports in brief: Boeheim brothers are coming to Utica; Utica’s Teddy Bear Toss game set for Dec. 3

UTICA — Jimmy and Buddy Boeheim -- the Syracuse University standout basketball players -- are set to be part of the 18th annual Sitrin Celebrity Wheelchair basketball games on Thursday, April 28.

The game is scheduled to start at 6:30 p.m. at Utica University’s Clark Athletic Center.

Proceeds from the event are fund the purchase of new sports wheelchairs and equipment and help offset training and competition expenses for STARS athletes, according to a release.

Combined, Jimmy and Buddy Boeheim averaged 33 points for the Orange.

“The addition of Jimmy Boeheim will certainly amplify the excitement for this year’s game” said Marc DePerno, director of the STARS program. “To have both Boeheim brothers take on the Sitrin STARS is monumental.”

Utica’s Teddy Bear Toss game set for Dec. 3

UTICA — The Utica University men’s hockey team’s signature event already has a date set.

The team’s New York Sash Teddy Bear Toss game -- which will be in its 18th year during the 2022-223 season -- is scheduled for Saturday, Dec. 3 against rival SUNY Oswego, the squad announced Wednesday. The game is scheduled for 7 p.m.

During the team’s game in 2021, 3,745 stuffed animals were donated to 20 different local groups.

During the game, the stuffed animals are tossed on the ice when Utica scores its first goal of the game.
